Barnsley is lucky to have numbered among its citizens philanthropist Samuel Joshua Cooper. From a wealthy local family, Cooper undertook a Grand Tour and journeyed throughout Europe in search of art and culture. He discovered the rich legacies of classical antiquity and the Renaissance and brought back many fine examples for the people of his home town to enjoy. You can experience them too, almost 100 years since he founded the gallery.
The Cooper Gallery is home to a vibrant café and craft showcase. Buy original ceramics, prints, textiles and jewellery by local and regional artists, meet friends and relax over coffee and cake. Discover some of the best art Yorkshire has to offer and a wonderful place to spend time.
